Abraham Maslow was born on April 1, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia. Maslow studied psychology and received a BA in 1930, an MA in 1931 and a PhD in 1934. He taught at Brooklyn College and was the chair of Psychology department at Brandeis. Maslow was inspired by the greatest minds of his time such as E.L. Thorndike, Adler and Fromm among many others. He passed away on June 8, 1970.
During his career, Maslow developed the field of humanistic Psychology and popularized the theory of self-actualization, that is, people are motivated to achieve certain needs. The human needs defer in importance and can therefore be arranged in a series of importance or rather a hierarchy. Some needs are more significant than the others. According to Maslow, each individual is unique and has innate desire to achieve his / her maxmium potential.
