Sometimes, after a long day (or week!) at work we just need a break. Most of the time our bodies are telling us it’s time to relax long before we listen because we don’t think we’ve earned the right to relax yet. And the truth is, most of the time we’re wrong!
Relaxing should be a part of your regular routine. Here are five helpful tips for incorporating a little more R&R into your daily life.
Keep a journal
A lot of people find it extremely satisfying and relaxing to vent at the end of each day by writing about their life in a journal. This can be especially true while coping with stressful situations. Some people like to write entire pages while others prefer to only scribble out a line or two. But, if journaling just becomes another item on your to-do list, you need to find another way to relax.
Develop a bedtime ritual
The key to developing a good bedtime ritual is repetition. Curl up with a good book by the soft light of your bedside lamp 30 minutes each night before bed. Light some candles and listen to some of your favorite music. A solid bedtime ritual brings comfort, energy, and balance to our lives.
Play!
Devote time each week to doing the things you love to do. If you enjoy painting buy yourself a canvas and create a masterpiece just for the fun of it (or you could take a class if you prefer). Get outside for some fresh air and exercise. Just do something that you find enjoyable and you’ll instantly find yourself more relaxed.
Enjoy a 20-minute nap
Experts say anything over 30 minutes can makes us feel groggy for the rest of the day but a 20-minute nap is great for relaxing and rejuvenating ourselves for the rest of the day.
Treat yourself
When we take the time to not only treat others how we would want to be treated, but treat ourselves how we would like to be treated, it can do wonders for reducing stress and feeling more relaxed.
Even if it’s something small, think of one thing you would like to do for someone you care about (do it for them) and do it for yourself! There’s nothing like pampering yourself every once in a while to make you feel appreciated and relaxed.
