Prioritizing your work (writing) and your personal life can be a bit of a challenge. It’s a busy world,

but studies have proven that a poor work-lifebalance can lead to loads of unhappiness, stress, and unproductive habits. The five tips outlined in this article are designed to help you restore balance between work as a writer and your personal life so you can enjoy both to the fullest.

Set Priorities

The first thing you need to figure out is what your top priority is. You can do this by asking yourself, “If I could only focus on one thing what would that one thing be?” Once you have your number one priority you can create your top five. This will help you determine how important writing is in your life and how much time you’re willing to dedicate to working as a writer.

Watch the clock

Tracking how much time you spend performing tasks will help you find a balance between your work (writing) and personal life. If you’re spending 10 hours each day writing, and only three with your family, something’s off. If the way you spend your time doesn’t align with your priority list you’re going to need to make some changes.

Don’t multitask

When you’re writing, don’t worry about what you’re going to cook for dinner, or the snacks you need to pick up for soccer practice, or anything else. When you’re working, work. When you’re spending time with your family don’t try and handle emails, make a phone call, or do anything else work related. Only focus on them.

Do something fun every day

If you’re going to achieve a healthy work-life balance you have to stay relaxed and treat yourself each day. This will also help you keep your creativity up and avoid burnout. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time on this activity. Go get coffee with a friend, set aside 30 minutes to read, or go for a walk. Just make sure it’s something you think is fun.

Pay attention to personal habits

Poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and bad exercise habits can all affect your work-life balance. You’re writing and work performance can suffer because you’re not getting enough sleep every night, and your personal relationships can hit a rough patch because you just don’t have the energy to invest in them. Evaluate your habits and see if you can find at least one thing you could change up to positively affect your work-life balance.
